BSJ celebrates Quality Systems Excellence in Service, Manufacturing and Agriculture
Kingston, Jamaica: The air of anticipation was rife among representatives of businesses competing for the BSJ’s National Quality Awards at the recently concluded event.
HCHS/Cardiff Hotel & Spa topped the Service category while two time-winner, Dairy Industries Jamaica Ltd copped the Manufacturing category award for a third time. Hillview Memorial Gardens, located in Montego Bay took the Small Business category at the 13th staging of the National Quality Awards (NQA) Ceremony, hosted by the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), an agency of the Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce (MIIC).
The NQA is Jamaica’s first quality systems based award that seeks to recognize and reward local companies in the Service, Manufacturing and Agricultural Sectors, and from among Micro, Small and Medium-sizes Enterprises (MSMEs), that demonstrate the application of high standards and quality systems in both the production of goods and delivery of service.
AMG Packaging, first runner up in the Manufacturing category also won the Business Results sectional prize and tied with Honey Bun Ltd for the Customer Focus Award. The second runner-up in Manufacturing, Red Stripe, was selected as the manufacturing company with the best Organizational Focus. Winner, Dairy Industries, captured the Human Resource Focus sectional award.
In the Service Category, Delapenha Funeral Home emerged first runner up and the Hi-Lo Food Stores (Cross Roads) was adjudged the second runner up. Hi-Lo Cross Roads won the Customer Focus sectional award while its sister store, Hi-Lo Food Stores Liguanea received the award for Process Management.
Hydro Garden of Jamaica was the sole recipient in the Agriculture category, taking home the prize for Organizational Focus.
First staged in 2004, the programme was staged annually until 2012 but saw a shift in the format, application and assessment of applicants, leading to the event being staged every other year as of 2014. The programme was suspended in 2020 in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially recognizing larger companies in the categories of Manufacturing and Service, the BSJ introduced a category for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises in 2006, and added Agriculture in 2016.
