Bureau of Standards Jamaica
Through information gained by its membership in the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR), since January 2012 the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) was able to bring Engineers, Scientists, Civil Servants, Businessmen, Marketers, Lawyers and Consumer representatives together in the form of a committee called Bamboo & Indigenous Materials Advisory Committee (BIMAC).
Members of BIMAC have so far done the following:
Used Bambusa vulagaris to develop prototypes:
Bamboo Board
Bamboo Plywood
Bamboo Tile
Bamboo School Furniture
Bamboo Baking Spoon
Banboo Cutlery
Bamboo Pens
Bamboo Charcoal
Members of BIMAC have also formed a non-profit organization called the Bamboo Industry Association of Jamaica which has been registered and has its mission the replication of the successes of BIMAC in order to link bamboo and bamboo products, sellers and buyers and to provide employment throughout Jamaica.
This will be done by mass production and commercialization of bamboo products through development and utilization of certification systems to be spearheaded by the INBAR's Focal Point at the Bureau of Standards Jamaica.
