With bamboo growing wild in many areas across the country, one would think that the wild grass could make for more profitable use if managed properly. That is what Robert Rainford is doing, and with the help of the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ), he has been looking to create more business opportunities for Jamaican farmers.

After realizing the amount of bamboo sticks that grew wild on his family’s land, Robert became proactive by using the land to cultivate crops like ackee, pepper, plantain, yellow yam, coconut and banana. However, it was during this time the BSJ’s Gladstone Rose introduced him to the various product possibilities that bamboo could generate. With the help of the BSJ, Mr. Rainford has gone on to establish the Green Gold Co-Operative Society Limited and helped to establish the Bamboo Industry Association of Jamaica (BIAJ), which is also spearheaded by the BSJ.
